DL is the IATA code for Delta. This two-character code, also sometimes referred to as the airline identification code, is assigned by the International Air Transport Association. It standardizes and simplifies tickets, timetables, tariffs, telecommunications and more.

You’ll be given a travel itinerary when your booking’s finalized. In this document is your flight number. The first one to two letters and single figure indicate your airline name (these are called IATA airline codes). This is followed by one, two, three or four digits — the flight number.

To have enough time to drop your baggage, clear customs and show up at the correct boarding gate, get to the airport around three hours before an international flight. If you’re traveling domestically, it’s two hours. Even if you’ve already picked your seat and received your boarding pass online, it’s worth keeping in mind that there are closing times for luggage check-in. It’s an hour before departure for international flights, and 45 minutes if you’re flying domestically. Of course, times can vary between airlines, so it’s wise to check these details well ahead of your flight.
